Time and Tide

Composer

In a remote Chinese town, an authoritarian father forces his wife and daughter to care for him after a stroke. Director Vee Shi, his son, explores filial duty and the legacy of patriarchy, asking who pays the emotional and financial price for an absent and violent father.

When I started out almost a decade ago I felt like I had to prove myself — endless layers, complex harmonies, fancy countermelodies, just to show what I could do. Years of practising narrative intuition taught me that less is enough, and that a good story is enough on its own. This score is exactly that. Vee’s family story hit close to home: I grew up in Chinese culture too, where love is often unspoken, and getting to put that into music meant everything.
